How to save money on lighting at home

If you are on a tight budget and want to find some low cost lighting ideas that do not compromise on style, practicality and are easy to implement, then the following ideas may just be of help to you.

The lamp

You can buy cheap lamps from most homeware stores. You can can also customize them to blend in with the rest of your home decor. If you can, try and buy brass fittings, as it is always cheaper than other metals. If you don’t like brass, don’t worry as you can always spray it a different color.

The beauty of the lamp is that they use relatively little electricity and you use them left often, therefore saving money. They also cast a lovely warm glow to any room.

Energy saving light bulbs.

Try and always buy energy saving lightbulbs if you can, such as LED lights. Although more expensive to buy initially, you save money in the long run. A standard lightbulb lasts on average 1,000 hours, but an energy efficient lightbulb lasts much longer and will save you roughly around 25 percent of your total energy bill.

The power of the dimmer switch.

Wherever you can in your home, try and use a dimmer switch for overhead lighting. They use much lower levels of electricity and you will be surprised how much you can save by simply dimming the lights. They are also relatively cheap to buy and usually very easy to install.

Motion sensors and door jams

If you have children who like to keep the lights on when not in the room, then motion sensors and door jams are a great investment. They are cheap to install but highly effective in switching lights off when not in use, therefore saving you money.

Utilize natural light wherever you can

Now this may sound pretty obvious but using natural light, as opposed to mains electricity will save you many dollars. Use light fitting drapes and make sure the windows are cleaned, the natural light will come flooding in.
